Chargers Kick Off 2017/18 Campaign With Win in Wales

September 17, 2017

U13 Invicta Chargers v U13 Cardiff Devils - Sunday 17th September 2017

The Chargers began the 2017/18 season on Sunday 17th September with the long road trip away to Cardiff and the Ice Arena Wales to face off against the Cardiff Devils. The previous season had seen close games between the teams in both the home and away fixtures, so Invicta were in a buoyant mood ahead of the game with a number of players making their Chargers debut.

The 1st Period was a tightly contested affair with Invicta and Cardiff going close early on only to have their efforts saved by some sharp net minding at both ends. It was the Devils who eventually broke the deadlock after 9 minutes to go 1 - 0 up and Cardiff scored again just before the end of the period to double their lead over the Chargers.

The Chargers started the 2nd Period brightly and were rewarded with a well taken goal scored by No. 15 Olly Wagg, assisted by No. 6 Brandon Chard but the Devils quickly restored the 2 goal cushion less than a minute later to make the score 3-1. After some neat interplay the Chargers scored, with No. 15 Olly Wagg neatly finishing, again assisted by No. 6 Brandon Chard, to make it 3-2. Both teams defended well and Invicta stand-in net minder No. 97 Charlotte Horvath made a number of saves to keep the Chargers in the game. The Devils scored again to go 4-2 ahead but the deficit was reduced by the Chargers to 4-3 with No. 6 Brandon Chard coolly finishing from an excellent assist by No. 54 Taylor Chard.

A fired up Chargers got the 3rd Period underway and began to cause the Devils defence problems straight from the opening face off. The spell of Invicta pressure paid off when No. 6 Brandon Chard scored assisted by No. 15 Olly Wagg to bring Invicta level at 4-4, only for the Devils to snatch the lead again less than 2 minutes later. Two quick fire goals scored by No. 56 Thomas Davies (the first assisted by No. 15 Olly Wagg and the second unassisted) put the Chargers ahead for the first time in the game at 5-6. However the lead was short lived as the Devils scored 2 goals in just over a minute to restore their lead at 7-6. With the game now entering into the final 5 minutes the Chargers found their second wind and started to put the Devils under pressure with some sharp passing and were rewarded when No. 15 Olly Wagg scored unassisted to bring Invicta level once more... Game On! Invicta continued to apply the pressure and shortly after forged ahead again when No. 10 Harrison Prentice, assisted by No. 54 Taylor Chard slotted home to make it 7-8 Chargers. With Cardiff

now on the ropes the Chard/Wagg pairing struck again with No. 6 Brandon Chard, assisted by No. 15 Olly Wagg, netting low to the right corner to make it 7-9 Chargers. The score remained the same and at the final buzzer the Chargers celebrated a well earned victory over the Devils making the long journey home from the Ice Arena Wales a happy one!

Man of the Match was awarded to a very deserving No. 97 Charlotte Horvath, with a still smiling No. 56 Thomas Davies collecting Spirit of the Game.
