After a long, hot summer off-ice, the Invicta Juniors’ 2018/2019 season got underway last Sunday when one of our Under 9 teams played in a round-robin cross-ice tournament in Chelmsford.
The success of Hockey Excellence programme at Invicta has seen growth in Under 9s playing ice hockey, so much so that Invicta is now able to ice two Under 9 teams competing in two separate groups.
The U9 Bucks will play with teams from Chelmsford, Lee Valley and Romford.
The U9 Roos will play with teams from Haringey, Streatham and Slough.
On Sunday It was the Bucks who travelled to Chelmsford and 6 new Invicta Junior players were playing in their first cross ice tournament - Harry Innes, Finley Tennant, Benjamin Bates, Samuel Lenk, Oliver Banks and Michael Sullivan.
Harry, Benjamin, Finley and Samuel all offered to play for a short-benched Lee Valley with Samuel taking the position of net minder for his first ever game. Finley managed to score his first goal when Lee Valley took on Romford. Well done Finley!
Meanwhile, the Bucks played the day’s hosts Chelmsford in their first game. Taylor Edwards scored early on in the game, followed by goals James Stanmore, Callum Wilson and Xenxo Dobbs. Chelmsford played a good game, scored some nice goals themselves and tested the quick reactions of Invicta ‘tendie’, Charlie Duncan-Woolard. Invicta stayed strong in defence and high in spirits in an entertaining opening game.
Next Invicta faced Lee Valley (complimented by some of their Bucks team mates!). The Bucks put in a strong performance with some nice play and some fantastic goals. Jacob O’Dwyer scored his first of the day with Taylor, Callum, James, Xenxo and Harry Foreman also making key contributions. Despite being short-benched the Lions battled hard, never gave up and got their rewards. For Invicta there were near misses from Michael Sullivan and Nicholas Per-Hall, who unfortunately hit the pipe. Well played all!
For the final cross ice match, it was great to see the Bucks play a newly re-formed Romford team. Invicta continued their good play and Harry scoring the opening goal. At the other end Charlie was playing brilliantly and stopping everything that was thrown his way. The Buck had contributions in this game from across the team, but special mention goes to Michael who scored his first goal as an Invicta Buckaroo! Congratulations Michael!
It was a great day with great performances all round. Taylor Edwards was awarded Man of the Match and Nicholas Pera-Hall received Spirit of the Match for the Bucks.
Lee Valley awarded their Spirit of the Match to Samuel Lenk for stepping up and helping out in goal.
Well done All! The next Under 9s game sees our Roos team travel to Haringey this Sunday 9th September, face off 17.00.
Let’s go Buckaroos!
