The U15 Invicta Mavericks took to the ice at the picturesque Alexandra Palace on Sunday 9th September, for their first game of the season against the Haringey Hounds. With a new look team, coach Rob Dell gave Mavs debuts to Thomas Davies, Callum Crosland-Evans, Harrison Prentice and Ethan Webb.
1st Period – Invicta started the game brightly with plenty of energy and purpose, and quickly jumped into a three-goal lead within just over minutes of the game. #15 Olly Wagg opened the scoring on 1:17 when he collected a nice feed from his centreman, #6 Brandon Chard, to roof the puck home. Shortly after nice work from #35 Ethan Webb behind the Hounds’ net resulted in fellow debutant #56 Thomas Davies scoring from close range at 2:51 to double the Mavs’ lead. Webb then raced through to finish, unassisted, on 4:01 to make the score 3-0 to Invicta. Haringey re-grouped and improved defensively for the remainder of the period, stifling the Mavs attacks to leave the visitors three goals to the good after 15 minutes.
2nd Period – Invicta came out confidently for the second frame and took full advantage of their hosts running into penalty trouble. After being played in by #76 Ollie Williams, #46 Matty Bell scored on 18:50 to make the score 4-0. Bell then hooked a Hounds’ forward who was bearing down on the Mavs’ goal on 19:41 and the referee had no option but to award a penalty shot. Mavs’ goalie, #31 Harvey Bryden, stood tall and closed the door to the deny the Hounds a goal and keep the score at 4-0. Wagg then made it five, as he scored his second of the game on 21:24 taking a nice pass from Webb to score. A quick-fire brace from defenceman Bell on 25:40 and 26:20 made the score 7-0, with #54 Taylor Chard making a nice stretch-pass for the first goal, before #86 Charlotte Davenport-Jeffery set up Bell. The hosts broke through Invicta’s defence and opened their account on 26:56 to make the score 7-1 at the end of the second period.
3rd Period - Webb extended Invicta’s lead at the start of the final period on 31:14, with his second goal of the evening assisted by Bell. Some Mavs indiscipline then saw Invicta’s scoring significantly slow down. Bell took an avoidable 2+10 boarding penalty on 32:44, and further minor penalties called against the Mavs disrupted their play and invited Hounds pressure. Although Invicta battled hard to hold off Haringey, they couldn’t stop the Hounds biting back to score on 41:30. The evening’s scored was rounded off on 41:52 when Davies scored his second goal of the game from close range after some nice hands from #10 Harrison Prentice.
FINAL: Haringey Hounds 2-9 Invicta Mavericks
A solid start to the season for the Mavericks with some well-worked goals, but a few lessons to be learned nonetheless.
