After the previous week’s loss at home to the Milton Keynes Storm, the Under 15 Invicta Mavericks were looking to bounce back with a strong performance against the Under 15 Haringey Hounds on Saturday 29th September at Planet Ice Gillingham.
Invicta Netminder #31 Harvey Bryden passed a late fitness test to take his place in the Mavericks crease and #11 Christy Clark made her Invicta debut.
1st Period – Invicta took an early lead when #15 Olly Wagg combined with #22 Ava Dell to fire a sharp shot past the Hounds’ goalie on the very first shift of the game on 0:35. Wagg then doubled the Invicta lead on 4:08 after some persistent work along the boards from #72 Will Williams to put the Mavericks in control. On 10:57 #6 Brandon Chard opened his account, receiving a nice pass from #95 Thomas Davies to confidently put the puck in the back of the Haringey net. Wagg competed his first period hattrick on 14:24 with an unassisted goal as he skated strongly through the Haringey defence before finishing confidently. A professional 15 minutes of hockey from the Mavericks who lead 4-0 at the period break.
2nd Period – The Mavericks were looking to build on their lead in the second period and managed to do just that on 16:18 with a powerplay goal from #46 Matty Bell who scored from close in, assisted by Wagg and #54 Taylor Chard. The Hounds’ frustration with the score line was becoming increasingly evident, with the match officials calling a series of minor penalties against both teams. With his brother in the penalty box for elbows, B Chard set up Wagg to register a short-handed goal on 20:49 to make the score 6-0 on 20:49. Bell and Wagg then combined brilliantly with some nice one-touch passing to set up #10 Harrison Prentice in front who was denied his first Mav’s goal by a fine save from the Haringey goalie. It was only a temporary denial though, as Prentice made no mistake seconds later, collecting a pass from Bell to rifle in his first Under 15 goal to round off the period’s scoring and leave the hosts leading 7-0 the end of the middle period.
3rd Period – Any thoughts of an Invicta shut-out were dashed early in the third frame when the impressive Hounds #21 collected a pass from the Haringey goalie to skate clear of the Mavs’ defence and beat the exposed Bryden on 33:52. With Invicta’s attack starting to fire blanks, Haringey doubled their tally on 37:22 to make the score 7-2 to the hosts. The remainder of the period saw a mixture of harsh and fair minor penalties against both teams disrupt the flow of the game. Invicta confidently killed off a 5 on 3 advantage for the visitors but could not register any more goals as the game petered to a close.
